Agencies Beware: Rip Off Artists, Face The Fury.

Illustration work for Design Indaba Design Fights

You may remember this from the Design Indaba. A beautiful campaign done by Jupiter Drawing Room, executed by Wicked Pixels.

Too bad the execution was a blatant rip off the style and technique of a world renown illustrator McBess.

And as soon as it hit the interwebs they were exposed and every decent illustrator in SA has been lambasting TJDR for their expediency on SA Creative Blog Between10and5 with a particularly strong response from top SA illustrator Kronk.

The lesson is clear. Be careful how influenced by any one artist you get when briefing a 3rd party to do work for you. Because while you may get it passed a clueless client, you'll certainly get caught out by the industry and do more damage to your client than your work would have done good.

  1. I don’t want to be a stickler but Shawn your Sinutab illustration and design (http://www.shawnroos.co.za/2009/08/31/sinutab-blocked-up-campaign/) looks a lot like some of Bromind’s work (http://www.brosmind.com/) he did a project Excedrin which is also a medicine company (http://www.shawnroos.co.za/2009/08/31/sinutab-blocked-up-campaign/). Just thought I give you a heads up. Now even if you didn’t copy him you would still be seen as guilty. :)

Hey Mitchell. I think your comment is valid insofar as the campaign we did has a layout full of illustrated stuff. But we werent the first to do it and neither were exederin, it’s more of a device than a concept. Also, the illustrative style is different. They do look quite similar, but it’s nothing like the almost exact stylistic and character copy that TJDR did. But i guess you could say we’re getting into semantics here.
